Getting past the storms to Pure Joy

As I lay in bed, listening to the storms in the early morning, that have finally come to relieve us of our 100 degree July days, i think about the storms of our lives. How do we survive? How do we move forward each day in the storms? I know with each storm comes green grass, flowers and new growth. So here are some of my thoughts for moving past the storm and into the light!

1.  PRAY – only when we begin to awaken do we realize that we were asleep. Sometimes we need to be alone to reflect on life, take time to pray and take care of yourself inside.

2. SMILE – as much as possible, whether life is joyful or not, a smile will lift your day as well as others. You can change someone’s day, as well as your own with a simple smile. You are always free to do what makes you smile because a smile shows the true depth of your soul.

3. ATTITUDE- be positive, never allow a bad day to change your mood. Don’t look at what you’ve lost, look at what you have.

4. GRATEFULNESS- focus your energy on what you have in your life, not what you have lost. Remember there are others with much less than you.

5. SHARE – your happiness with others, through your actions and your words. You will never regret helping someone else’s life.

6. COMMUNICATE – talk to others and release your worries and anxieties so that you can move past anything that is weighing on your heart. Then you will be able to move beyond it to a brighter life.

7. HAPPINESS- can be created in your present, don’t think it’s something you’re planning for your future. The happiness you experience each day is determined by the love you share. Be yourself, it’s the best way to be happy.

8. GOOD FRIENDS & FAMILY- are worth their weight in gold, treasure those healthy relationship and trust in their love for you.

9. FREEDOM- to walk away from negative situations, be in tune with your feelings, don’t question your gut just walk away for your happiness. One of the greatest freedom is not caring what others think. If you worry about what others think of you, they own you. Be your own self.

10. TEMPER – your anger, words can hurt so much deeper than physical pain, stop and think before speaking in anger. You are always in control of your thoughts, be confident and kind, not mad and insecure.

11. CHANGE – something you don’t like, if you can’t change it, change the way you think about it. Let go of the need to always be right and you will change to be happy.  Life does not have to be perfect to be wonderful. Sometimes being open to change will allow a magnificent event to come into your life.

12. DREAM – about what you want to be, then go do it.  Good things come to those you pursue it with happiness and love. What you believe has more power than what you wish or hope for.  You become what you believe. Be open to dreams, hope and joy.

13. FORGIVE – yourself and others, it takes time and patience, but you can heal emotionally to create love in your life.

14.WEALTH – can’t by happiness, it’s nice to have material things, but don’t loose track of the things money can’t by, those are the true treasures in life.

15. LAUGH – because life will never be perfect, but it is wonderful. Don’t try to control everything, relax, breathe, let go, live in the moment and laugh.

16. KNOWING YOURSELF – is truly believing and living as yourself. With so much social conditioning and pressure in our society, we can forget who we are. Stay true to yourself in all situations.

17. BLESSINGS – fill your life, learn to see blessings in everything. The close parking spot, the unexpected call from a friend, the food before you, the smile of a stranger, or the hug of a loved one, embrace every blessings and share them with others. Satisfaction is not always the fulfillment of what you want; it is the realization of how blessed you are for what you have

18. PASSION – in our lives is important, discover what you are passionate about and do it. Whether it be crafting, fishing, dancing, reading, cooking or meditating, discover it and summerge yourself into it to give your life passion

19. EMBRACE – people, situations and life as it comes…storms or bright days. Each day has a lesson for us to learn. Always learn the lesson and grow.

20. LOVE – it’s all you need, time spent on worry and hate sucks your energy. Center in love and know that you are loved, write your own love story every day. John and Paul had it right…the love you take is equal to the love you make.

Book of James 4

The fourth chapter of James begins with “Where do the wars and where do the conflicts among you come from? Is it not from your passions that make war within your members? You covet but do not possess.” What are you willing to fight for? Is it because you are coveting something?

I was talking with someone the other day who shared her struggles of constantly being judged by neighbors. What type of car I drive, what type of house I own, what type of clothes I wear, what type of achievements I have achieved and so on. Within our own circles there are inner “wars” of envy and jealousy going on. People do covet, they try to keep up. Children with cell phones in elementary school, iPads for Christmas and cars on a 16th birthday. A life of privilege? or just a life trying to keep up the facade of privilege? My children didn’t have cell phone until they were driving and no one in my family has an iPad yet…and we are surviving just fine!

Our passion should be for our hearts, our morality, our dignity, our good name.
A good name does not come with what we have but from who we are.
How we treat others and how we reach out to those in need.

This youtube show a selfless young child thinking of others and standing up for what we believes in, it’s worth a watch.

The Girls that silenced the world

James also tells us “you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. If anyone, then, knows the good they ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them.”

Life is good! There are so many blessings each and every day.
Seek them, embrace them, share them. Speak up, as this young woman did and be a mist for good in the world.

We spend time and energy on emails, texting Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, Pinterest, Ancestry and endless hours on just surfing the web. Can we put some of that energy into releasing the things we covet and embrace the goodness of life?

We need to use these vices for good! I know they have for me!
Emails and texting have improved communication, I know when my father was battling Lymphoma, my siblings and I communicated through emails, cell phones and texts through every day with status on Dad’s outlook.
Facebook has reconnected friends and families, I have cousins and friends all over the world that I now am able to experience their children’s lives through messages and pictures.
LinkedIn and Twitter is a great was to share updates about your life also.
Pinterest and Ancestry have been my new passion for about six months now. On Ancestry I have found birth certificates, naturalization papers and census listing family members that are long gone and giving me a glimpse into their lives. Finding relatives of cousins from California to Italy. And Pinterest is a wonderful place for me to post all the website I discover and want to save for later, a much more creative and attractive way than using the favorite button. It’s also a great way to share my tastes and dreams and to see friends boards too.
So I’m a FBer, Tweeter and Pinner – all for good, positive sharing.

We don’t know what will happen tomorrow.
Worrying about how others judge you is useless, that will only spark conflict in your life.
Rise above those that covet and embrace the joys of life – share your dreams, allow others to share theirs, in whatever way works (techy or not).

Stand tall in knowing that your mist is only here for a moment, but for that moment, it provided comfort to another.

What’s on your Christmas list?

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas…every where you go!

And I’m not just singing the song, it really is looking like Christmas. Chicago has only gotten a snow dusting for one day so far, but it was enough to get you bundling up and preparing for the long winter nights.

I love the change of seasons, the cool brisk air, the scarves pulled over your face, the warm Ugg boots and the cold “puppy dog” nose. With winter weather comes the joy of Christmas. It is a time of hope, when miracles seem possible. It is a time of peace, where neighbors share good cheer. It is a time of love, where greetings are sent and hugs are delivered with family and friends spending time with each other.

I pray for all those families that are spending this Christmas without a loved one. That empty space at the table can only be filled with memories and stories of times spent together. May each of those families feel the warmth of Christ as he holds them especially close through the holidays. I am wishing that they too can see the hope, peace and love of Christmas.

Christmas time is filled with decorating, baking, celebrating, shopping and gift-giving. My children always ask for a list of ideas that they can get me – and they are always eager to send me what they would like as gifts. So what on my list?

Two weeks with both my children home
My husband’s homemade French Toast
Game nights together
Dinner and a show Downtown
Snuggling on the couch watching movies

My favorite gifts are never store bought…they are always heart given…memories that last forever, love that never ends.
This Christmas, I am forever grateful for my incredible family, our good fortune of health and home.

May the brown paper packages tied up with string under your Christmas tree be filled with JOY!!!

The Way

Have you seen the movie “The Way”?
It’s in theaters now, starring Martin Sheen.

What path does life lead you down? We have so many choices each day from the moment we awake. What to wear, what to eat, which road to travel to work, relationships to build, relationships to mend, relationships to let go. How we react to others says so much about our character. This movie is a beautiful tribute to the pilgrims that walk the path that St. James took to Camino de Santiago. This can be a 500 mile trek for some, a pilgrimage that can be life changing.

Witnessing the amazing countryside of Spain and the hospitality of villagers, the pilgrims walk in solitude or with strangers that become friends. Often they are working out struggles in their lives that the real world allows them to hide. But we can not hide from the rocks that God allows in our lives. But he also gives us the ability to smooth those rough edges away.

What are we hiding by not being our true selves?
What do we need time in solitude to pray about?

Are there people who have come into your life at moments when you are in need of a different perspective, a calm voice, a warm embrace. Martin Sheen resists sharing his life and his journey with anyone, but life has another route planned for him. To watch his growth through his long walk shows us the way of our own journey, or at least what we try to avoid and that which awaits us.

We can not escape life and all of the rocky paths that lie ahead.
But wait!
Around the corner is the smooth, gentle landscape that give us joy, hope and love!

Watch this inspirational story that has a father embarking on a historical pilgrimage to honor his son’s desire to finish the journey of The Way. What Tom doesn’t plan on is the profound impact the journey will have on him and the life he began comfortable with as a widow with a routine life.

You will see yourself in so many of the characters and grow as they develop throughout the movie. It’s so worth your time – Enjoy!!

Bring me balance

The turbulence of life can plummet at us in an instance.
Our lives can be turned upside down without notice.
Normal today is not normal tomorrow, change is inevitable.
How do we balance all the pain, suffering, heartaches with all the joy, happiness and love through the transitions of life?

The past two weeks have been a roller coaster ride for my family. If ever there was a time that we are out of balance and flooded with uncertainty it’s now. Often when we feel most comfortable and content is when we are called to reach deep into our hearts and deal with the storms of life.

Last week started with my husband being called in Monday morning to cutbacks and his job eliminated. Devastating to any family, especially in this job market. We discovered by the end of the week the unemployment will not cover our losses – less than 20% of his income, since our children are not dependents the rate drops rapidly. Friday we left for Phoenix to move our daughter into her apartment where she is teaching with heavy hearts, the reality that she will no longer lives with us sinking into our consciousness. Our baby girl has grown up. As we returned home we discovered messages from the doctor wanting to see my husband for follow-up to his blood work. The dark thoughts began to seep in.

BALANCE – TRUST – GRACE – GIFT – PRAYER

People get pulled into darkness and despair and believe me, I could see the black hole spiraling next to us.
But we looked upward and saw the light.
This world can be seen through a negative lens if you choose to.

What do you choose?
I choose GOODNESS,  I choose LIGHT,  I choose LIFE,  I choose FAITH!!

But we are so blessed with a loving family, supportive friends and a faithful Father that will never leave us.

“He will be with you and will never fail you or forsake you.
So do not fear or be dismayed” Deut 31:8

GOD IS GOOD!!
The doctor’s visit was fine, some improvements in his counts…good news
Friends and colleagues writing letters of recommendations and getting the word out for open positions…grace
Learning that although unemployment is over 9% now, in the technology job market, it’s only 3%…hope
Seeing our daughter in a safe, secure, lovely apartment; meeting her students and seeing how she is living her dream…delight

BLESSINGS in the storms…GOD’S GRACE in time of trouble…

After experiencing this initial period of storms and understanding there are most likely more still to come, I can understand how people can fall into despair and depression. It’s an effort every day to see the goodness and love that is in front of you.

We have a choice to balance our lows with our highs…or we can sink into loneliness and fear.
Oh, don’t get me wrong, I found myself sinking with the onset of so much evil so quickly sent our way. But I sank to my knees in prayer.

I looked to someone who could actually do something to help me. And I find peace in my moments of doubt in His love.

Years ago, we decided to close our retail shop and although we both had jobs waiting for us it was still a transition. A loss. A change.
I was constantly drawn to Proverbs 3:5 through out that period

Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
on your own intelligence do not rely;
In all your ways be mindful of him,
and he will make straight your path.

We survived that transition and we will survive this too.

I have always prayed for those unemployed and under-employed, but now I pray in unison with them.

The mantra I am drawn to find balance and peace with today is in knowing that: “Jesus I trust in You!”

Can I get an AMEN!!
